Sabudana Khichdi recipe for breakfast / How to make Sabudana Khichdi / Sago Khichdi recipe

Today I am sharing another our family favourite breakfast i.e. Sabudana Khichdi. I usually make sabudana khichdi for our breakfast .

Sabudana Khichdi is one of the most popular breakfast recipes . It is also cooked during fasting or upvaas. I have already shared one more Sabudana khichdi for fasting . In that recipe , I shared the way how we cook sabudana khichdi at home during fast.

Here , I am going to share another version of sabudana khichdi recipe that we cook for our breakfast. Sabudana khichdi is very simple and flavourful recipe that you and your family can enjoy any time of the day. Each spoon of sabudana khichdi will make you crave for more.

Sabudana is a good source of carbohydrate . It provides energy throughout day during fast. It took me many attempts to get perfect sago khichdi with each sago pearls separated . I learned with time and practice. The biggest problem we face when making sabudana khichdi is sticky and clumpy sago pearls . We have to remember few points given below before making sabudana khichdi.

  1. Wash the sabudana in a colander or sieve until you get clear water to get rid of starch . This is very important step before soaking sabudana.
  2. Always soak the sabudana in only enough water required to submerge the sago pearls. Water level should only touch the level of sabudana. Soaking sago in a lot of water will turn the sago khichdi sticky and clumpy.
The recipe may require 4-6 hour soaking but I always prefer overnight soaking and in morning there should be no water left.
From my experience , if we follow these two rules , sabudana khichdi will come out perfect and non sticky.

Ingredients

  • Big Sabudana or sago or tapioca 1 cup
  • Ground nuts 2 tbs
  • Boiled potato 1 big
  • Green chillies 4
  • Cumin seeds 1/2 tsp
  • Cilantro leaves thinly chopped 2 tbs
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil 2-3 tbs
  • Water approx. 1/2 cup or as required .

Method

  • Wash sabudana in a colander or sieve under running water until you get clear water.

  • Transfer washed sabudana into a bowl and add enough water to submerge the sabudana . I have 1 cup sabudana here , so added about half a cup of water.
  • Soak the sabudana overnight or 4-6 hours . I have soaked sabudana overnight.

  • In morning , sabudana would soaked up all the water . There should be no water left in bowl.
  • Press a sabudana pearls with your finger. It should be pressed easily and keep it aside.
  • Dry roast peanuts in a pan till crisp and brown .

  • Once cooled down little , rub peanuts with fingers to remove the skin.
  • Crush peanuts coarsely in mortal pastel and keep it aside.
  • Mix coarsely crushed peanuts into sabudana and set it aside.

  • Take one big boiled potato and cut into small chunks.
  • Cut two green chillies thinly and another two chillies in lengthwise.
  • Add 1 tsp oil in a pan and sauté sliced green chillies for 4-5 seconds . Remove green chillies from pan and set aside.
  • In same pan , add 1 tbs or 11/2 tbs oil . Add cumin seeds and let it crackle.
  • Add chopped green chillies and sauté for few seconds.
  • Add boiled potato chunks and sauté for 1 min. on low heat.
  • Next add soaked sabudana with roasted peanuts.
  • Add salt to taste and mix it very well.

  • Next keep on stirring on low heat.
  • Keep on tossing until all sabudana pearls become translucent.
  • Do not overcook them else sabudana will turn sticky and chewy.
  • Add chopped cilantro and mix well.

  • Switch off the flame and Sabudana khichdi is ready to serve.
  • I like to have my Sabudana khichdi with a cup of tea.
Enjoy !
