Onion-Potato Poha / Kanda-Batata Poha / Poha / Flattened rice fried with onion and potatoes


Poha is very popular breakfast among MadhyaPradesh , Uttarpradesh , Maharashtra and Chattisgarh. In Maharashtra , people call it Kanda-Batata poha and it is famous as poha in MP , UP and Chattisgarh. Poha is a standard breakfast in MP and Chattisgarh. 




This poha recipe is quite simple and quick which I usually cook at my place. People have different ways to make poha . Some use boiled potaotes in poha but here I am going to sauté potatoes with onion and then add poha.


This recipe will take no time of yours. Poha is favorite breakfast in my family. I usually cook poha every alternate Saturdays or Sundays. Poha is very healthy , nutritious and easily digestable so it's a good  breakfast for kids too.

In Chattisgarh , People enjoy poha with jalebi. You can find poha - jalebi at every halwai shop in morning. We usually enjoy poha with a cup of tea at home.


So let us start with recipe.....

Ingredients

  • 2 cups of Poha
  • Peanuts
  • 1 big potato
  • 1 big onion
  • 2 green chillies
  • 2 tbsp Oil
  • 1/4 tsp Mustard seeds
  • 5-6 curry leaves fresh or dried
  • 1/4 tsp Turmeric 
  • Salt to taste
  • Cilantro or dhaniya for garnishing

Method

Finely chop onions .
Chop potato little bit thin and small pieces.
Take a colander and add poha in it .
Wash poha under running water in colander with gentle hands.
Drain all water and keep it aside.

Heat a pan or kadhai and add peanuts. Sauté them till they become crunchy .

While sautéing add just 2 or 3 drops of oil. 

If you feel peanuts get little darker in color and crunchy, remove them on a plate.

Heat oil in the same kadhai, add mustard seeds and curry leaves. Here I am using dried curry leaves.

When mustard seed start crackle , add onion and sauté till golden.


Add turmeric powder and potatoes.

If you have green peas , you can add at this point. Green peas add great flavour and taste to poha.
Mix well ,add little salt and very little water .
Cook the potatoes with the lid on.
After 5 min , potatoes will be cooked.

Add soaked and drained poha to this.
Mix very well with gentle hands.

Check the seasoning, add little more salt to this . Cover the kadhai.
Cook for 5 min. After 5 min remove from heat but don't open lid for another 5 min.
Garnish with cilantro, peanuts and onion pieces.

Squeeze some lemon juice over it. It's optional but lemon juice adds a tangy flavour to poha.
Some people add pomegranate seeds (anardana) over poha.
Serve poha with a cup of tea or coffee .
