Katahal sabzi / Jackfruit sabzi / Spicy jackfruit fry / Katahali kisabzi / Masaledar katahal

Hi friends, Today's featured recipe is Katahal ki sabzi or jackfruit sabzi.
I like jackfruit a lot whether it is stir fried or curried. I love it either ways. These days you can easily get jackfruit in market . My mom always serves Katahal sabzi with Chana dal parathas (dalbhari ) and kheer. In Uttarpradesh , there is a local festival when we cook Katahal sabzi , dalbhari and kheer. This festival is known as Ganga Dasshehara.

There is one more day when we always cook jackfruit sabzi that is choti holi or first day of holi.
There are two kinds of Katahal or jackfruit available in market :
  • Small / Katahali
  • Big / Katahal
Big jackfruits are more fleshy and have big seeds that you can separate . Small jackfruits are not fleshy  and have small seeds that you can not separate .
In today's recipe , I am using small jackfruit  . In Uttarpradesh , we call these small jackfruits as Katahali.

Cutting and chopping Katahal is little tricky , messy and time taking. You can get peeled and chopped jackfruit from some vegetable vendors or in supermarkets. Jackfruit skin is very hard and pricky . So you need a big knife to peel jackfruit . Before start peeling , apply little oil on your hand and edge of knife.

Let's get start the recipe.

Ingredients

  • Katahal / jackfruit
  • Oil 3-4 tbsp
  • Onion 2 medium size
  • Coriander powder 2 tbsp
  • Turmeric powder 1 tsp
  • Garam masala 1 tbsp
  • Chilli powder 1tsp
  • Salt to taste
  • Cilantro for garnishing

Method

Apply little oil on you palm and peel the hard skin of jackfruit .

Chop the jackfruit into small pieces as shown in pic.

Boil the jackfruit pieces with 2 cups of water for 15-20 mins on medium heat with lid on.

After 20 mins take a piece of jackfruit and press it . If it feel soft , remove the jackfruit from heat.
Drain jackfruit pieces in a colander and let them cool down .

Chop the onions finely.

My mom always sauté these jackfruit pieces in a tbsp oil for 5 min after boiling and draining them.I skipped the sauté process today because I didn't have enough time. I must say sautéing jackfruit may enhance the taste. So it is upto you either you can sauté or skip it.
Heat the oil in a pan.

Add onions and sauté till golden .

Add coriander powder, turmeric powder, chilli powder and garam masala.

Add  little water and cook the masala for about 2 min as shown in pics.

Add jackfruit pieces and mix it well.

Add salt to taste .
Add about 1 cup of water and mix well.

Cook for another 15 mins.
Keep stirring while cooking.
When all the water absorbed , garnish with finely chopped cilantro.

Serve with hot roti , parathas or dal-rice.

Enjoy !!!
